The 53rd annual Georgia Tech Basic Economic Development Course, in conjunction with IEDC, will be held at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta on March 17th – 20th 2020. This theme for this year's course will be "Place-Based Economic Development: Creating communities where people want to live and businesses want to be."

Our sessions will explore whether it is more important for economic developers to concentrate on developing programs for people or to focus on creating quality places. In today’s highly mobile society, quality of life is essential for attracting talent and retaining existing companies. Workforce development programs can be successful at keeping some employees in the community long term; however, many workers are likely to migrate to other job centers once their skill set has improved. Our guest speakers will address both sides of this issue.

Our keynote speaker this year is Ryan Gravel, the mastermind behind Atlanta’s Beltline park project. The Beltline consists of 22 miles of former railway corridors that surround the core of Atlanta inside the perimeter Interstate 285. The railroad right-of-way has been transformed from rails to trails and now incorporates paved bike/jogging paths, pocket parks, active greenspaces, landscaping, art exhibits, and major redevelopment projects. The Beltline has become so popular that neighborhoods located along the recreational trail have been referred to as Atlanta’s beachfront property. Long term plans propose to add a streetcar/light rail component to increase connectivity and provide residents with transportation alternatives.

Come join us to learn what communities are doing to capitalize on their unique assets and how Placemaking can be successfully used as an economic development tool.
