Meet Austell's first new mayor in 30 years

Ollie Clemons, formerly mayor pro tem, was sworn in as acting mayor July 1, taking over for longtime Mayor Joe Jerkins. Jerkins left office at the end of June after he said symptoms of his Parkinson’s disease made it no longer possible to serve.

The reason is the 0.69 acre at 5060 Austell Powder Springs Road is in the county’s Clarkdale Mill Village Historic District. If the city annexes the property, then all of the county’s historic preservation protections would be removed from the property.

Mableton, the home of former Gov. Roy Barnes, was briefly incorporated in 1912, but de-annexed and became part of unincorporated Cobb County in 1916. Hutchins said the movement for incorporation has been discussed for more than a decade, but it never “had any teeth” until recently.

Austell increases fines for disorderly conduct

Fines had been $224 for the first offense, $438 for the second offense and $856 for the third offense. Now the fines will be $250 as a minimum and $1,000 as a maximum for each offense.

Austell to double disc golf course

The Austell City Council decided 5-0 on March 4 to buy more disc golf baskets from Prodigy Discs for $4,050.Funding will come from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
