Ollie Clemons, formerly mayor pro tem, was sworn in as acting mayor July 1, taking over for longtime Mayor Joe Jerkins. Jerkins left office at the end of June after he said symptoms of his Parkinson’s disease made it no longer possible to serve.
Nearly 10 years after flooding destroyed homes and businesses in Austell, the city is celebrating the opening of a facility to provide young people with a chance to explore potential career interests.
To enhance the city’s new water fountains at the front of the Threadmill Complex, 5000 Austell Powder Springs Road SW, the city will spend about $73,000 to install irrigation and landscaping.
Public Works Department Director Bo Garrison said all of the resurfacing money has been used. However, he said Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) money still is available from other city funds.
The reason is the 0.69 acre at 5060 Austell Powder Springs Road is in the county’s Clarkdale Mill Village Historic District. If the city annexes the property, then all of the county’s historic preservation protections would be removed from the property.
Mableton, the home of former Gov. Roy Barnes, was briefly incorporated in 1912, but de-annexed and became part of unincorporated Cobb County in 1916. Hutchins said the movement for incorporation has been discussed for more than a decade, but it never “had any teeth” until recently.
Brush around the ancient rock sculpture will be cut back, said Austell Community Affairs and Parks Departments Director Jim Graham on March 4 during the Austell City Council meeting.
Amounting to $328,225, several expenditures for a truck, three vehicles, firetruck computers and other purchases were approved on March 4 by the Austell City Council. Funding is from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
Fines had been $224 for the first offense, $438 for the second offense and $856 for the third offense. Now the fines will be $250 as a minimum and $1,000 as a maximum for each offense.
The Austell City Council decided 5-0 on March 4 to buy more disc golf baskets from Prodigy Discs for $4,050.Funding will come from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
