As the debate over e-scooters rages on in the city of Atlanta and beyond, other intown leaders are tinkering with another solution: riding-sharing using a souped-up, low-speed electric cart.
Consultant Shannon Powell has already started work for an initial one-month duration. If she proves a good fit City Manager Patrick Bryant said he’ll recommend extending her contract through year’s end. Powell is working a 24-hour week with a one-month salary of $9600.
Qualifying for Avondale Estates’ Nov. 5 elections closed August 23 setting the stage for a one-on-one mayoral showdown between former friends and colleagues Clai Brown and incumbent Jonathan Elmore.
The city still has to close on the BAN with PNC Bank, which should happen in the next month. Assuming the city closes it then has the ability to borrow money for those projects without needing the voter approval required by a general obligation bond.
As of now Fisher is the only announced commission candidate. In a separate mayoral race incumbent Jonathan Elmore will square off against former City Manager Clai Brown.
This project would include a two-acre park that could become the city’s social and economic center, along with two commercial/retail buildings fronting the park and facing U.S. 278.

Unlike the BOMC, the URA can issue a bond anticipation note for financing five projects the city has given top priority. By issuing a BAN, the city has the ability to borrow money for those projects without needing the voter approval required by a general obligation bond.
Avondale Estates’ Board of Mayor of Commissioners is voting this week on whether to create an Urban Redevelopment Area, a board that, unlike the BOMC, can issue a bond anticipation note for financing projects that the city has given top priority.
The city also has plans to add bike lanes, wider sidewalks and create shorter crossings across 278, thus making downtown more accessible to residents south of the hedges.
