September 12, 2019

The City of South Fulton and Comcast came together to celebrate and expand on their existing partnership to better the local community during last night’s City of South Fulton City Council Meeting.

Comcast delivers the City of South Fulton a check.

As background, in May 2019, City of South Fulton Councilmember Carmalitha Gumbs led three community cleanups in celebration of Comcast Cares Day (CCD), which is one of the nation’s largest annual corporate days of service. Councilmember Gumbs’ service events were held at Cliftondale Elementary School, Stonewall Tell Elementary School and Westlake High School. Nearly 200 volunteers turned out. Councilmember Helen Willis (District 3) also supported Comcast Cares Day with special volunteer events in her district, at places including Camp Creek Elementary, Seaborn Lee Elementary and Wolf Creek Middle School.

Comcast announced that Councilmember Gumbs will receive a $3,300 CCD grant in recognition of her team’s efforts and in support of future activations. Comcast employee and CCD Champion, Lizzette Tarver, was also on hand to present four laptops to four City of South Fulton students and one senior citizen.

“I am inspired by the tremendous enthusiasm and dedication that Comcast has for giving back to the local City of South Fulton community,” Councilmember Gumbs said. “Comcast Cares Day illustrates the positive impact that we can make on the world around us by coming together to celebrate volunteerism with our friends, families, and local partners and leaders. This grant will support these ongoing efforts.”

Earlier this year, Comcast also hosted an internet safety training seminar and surprise laptop giveaway for seniors at the Quality Living Services (QLS) Senior Center in South Fulton. Comcast named graduating high school senior Julian Woods, of Westlake High School, a Leaders & Achievers Scholar over the summer.

“We are firm believers that corporations have a responsibility to give back to the communities where their employees and customers live and work and to partner with local governments, organizations, and nonprofits to make our communities stronger,” said Andy Macke, Vice President of External Affairs for Comcast’s Big South Region.

In recognition of the company’s efforts, City of South Fulton Mayor Bill Edwards, Councilmember Gumbs, and the entire of the City Council bestowed a formal proclamation, declaring September 10, 2019 “Comcast Cares Day” in the city.
