Mission Statement

The goal of the Mayor’s Youth Commission is to encourage effective youth engagement in Athens-Clarke County and to provide an opportunity for youth voices to communicate directly with local government leadership. The Mayor's Youth Commission will encourage civic engagement and community service while also building a working understanding of how local government works.

The Mayor's Youth Commission aims to provide young people in the community with meaningful opportunities to contribute their experiences, knowledge, and ideas to help address issues within Athens-Clarke County.

Athens-Clarke County leadership and staff will follow three core values (adapted from the National League of Cities, Authentic Youth Civic Engagement):

  • Treat youth as valuable partners in the work of local government
  • Prepare and support youth to take on meaningful roles in addressing important issues
  • Respect and listen to youth.
