Georgia Cities Week Takes the Spotlight This Month

From April 22-28, cities large and small from North to South will celebrate Georgia Cities Week. Themed “Georgia Cities: In the Spotlight,” this week gives cities an opportunity to share information about the valuable services they provide to residents and how cities positively impact their quality of life. The week is also an opportunity to celebrate community achievements and recognize volunteers and city employees.
Some ways in which cities participate include holding city-wide cleanups in conjunction with Keep Georgia Beautiful, recycling events, displays of city equipment, moving council meetings to different locations, inviting students to participate in coloring or essay contests and holding open houses at city facilities.
The city of Newnan will host a new outdoor film series on Friday, April 27, during Georgia Cities Week. “The Founder” and “The Odd Life of Timothy Greene,” which were both filmed in Newnan, will be shown on the sides of buildings located in the city.
“We are putting Newnan ‘In the Spotlight’ as Hollywood has done many times,” said Newnan Mayor Keith Brady. “The city has served as a backdrop for many of today’s most popular film and television series.”
The city will also host a Touch-a-Truck event beforehand on West Broad Street from 6-8 p.m. Newnan is facilitating a city-inspired art contest for Georgia Cities Week in the local high schools. Art students were encouraged to participate in submitting their best entries that depict this year’s theme. The top five art pieces will be displayed at city hall all week, and the winners will be announced at a later date.
“We are very proud of our city and the services we provide that make it attractive to residents and visitors,” said Gina Snider, Newnan public information officer. “Too often, people are unaware of how cities enhance their quality of life, and we like them to participate in these events and learn more about Newnan’s story.” 
All participating cities are encouraged to use social media to celebrate and promote their events with the hashtags #GaCities and #GaCitiesWeek, and to also send out event reminders via Twitter and Facebook or to post interesting facts about the city to its followers.
