GMA Organizes Call With FEMA to Address Helene Damages

Following up on a June 19 request for cities affected by Hurricane Helene to share their FEMA reimbursement challenges, GMA held a call on Aug. 29 with those who responded to the survey. Hosted by FEMA and led by GMA CEO Larry Hanson, the call gave city officials an opportunity to update FEMA leadership on reimbursement status. FEMA regional staff committed to continue one-on-one follow-up with impacted communities and stressed the importance of coordination among FEMA, GEMA, and local governments to ensure recovery priorities are addressed.

FEMA Reform Proposed in H.R. 4669

Meanwhile, Congress is considering H.R. 4669, the Fixing Emergency Management for Americans (FEMA) Act of 2025. The bill proposed elevating FEMA to Cabinet-level status, reorganizing its core offices, and expanding regional authority. While still in the early stages of the legislative process, the proposal is being closely monitored by GMA, NLC, and others, as it represents the most significant reform of federal disaster management in decades.

NLC Members Have Leadership Opportunities

NLC leadership applications for elected leaders in NLC member communities are open until Monday, Sept. 29. NLC invites dedicated local elected officials to apply for positions on NLC’s Board of Directors, Federal Advocacy Committees, Member Councils or Constituency Groups.
