Georgia law permits cities to collect a fee from companies selling insurance policies to individuals or businesses within their boundaries. Unlike the insurance premiums tax, which is collected by the Insurance Commissioner’s office and allocated to cities based on population, these license fees are directly collected by the cities.
Our Support Through MRSI
To assist with this process, our subcontractor, Municipal Revenue Services, Inc. (MRSI), identifies insurance companies with agents operating in your city, including those based outside of Georgia. This service helps uncover often hard-to-locate companies, allowing cities to collect the necessary fees from them.
Focus on Delinquent Fees
Most cities actively collect current license fees; however, our focus is on retrieving fees that have become delinquent.
Benefits of Our Service
- Time and Cost Savings: We handle all follow-up communications with companies, alleviating the burden of collecting delinquent fees.
- Comprehensive Discovery: We identify all companies selling insurance policies within your city, including those you might overlook. This information enables you to bill for collections in subsequent years.
- Consistent Revenue Generation: Our service helps ensure a regular influx of revenue each year, which is vital for funding important projects and initiatives.
Cost Structure
Cities receive half of the total collections every December, while the remainder is retained by GMA and MRSI as compensation for their services. Fees are determined based on population, ranging from set amounts of $15 to $150 per company.
Financial Impact on Your City
Each year, approximately half of the cities utilizing this service receive more revenue than they pay in GMA membership dues. For the remaining cities, these collections contribute to covering at least part of their membership dues, making this program a valuable resource for funding your GMA membership.
