Mentoring Program

Local government is a complex and ever-evolving environment. For newly elected officials, stepping into the role of mayor or council member can be daunting, as they are immediately responsible for making decisions that shape the future of their communities.

To support newly elected officials, the GMA Mentoring Program offers guidance, encouragement, and knowledge sharing from seasoned officials. This initiative is part of GMA’s commitment to providing cost-effective learning and networking opportunities for elected leaders.

Mentoring Program Guidelines

Each newly elected official who participates in the program will be paired with an experienced mentor. During the first year, mentor and mentee participants agree to:

    • Schedule an initial meeting to establish the mentor-mentee relationship;
    • Visit each other’s city at least once;
    • Communicate by phone, email, or in person as needed, with at least one contact per month.

Mentor Responsibilities

    • Initiate contact with the mentee;
    • Provide ongoing guidance, support, and encouragement;
    • Share best practices;
    • Assist with resources, tools, and information; and
    • Identify opportunities for the mentee to engage in GMA training, district meetings, regional workshops, and events.

Mentee Responsibilities

    • Ask questions and seek advice;
    • Contact the mentor when needed;
    • Be open to the mentor’s guidance; and
    • Commit time to the mentoring program.

GMA Responsibilities

GMA will make every effort to pair each mentee with a mentor from a city of similar size and services, and within close geographic proximity.
