According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Senator P.K. Martin and Representative Chuck Efstration, who both represent Dacula, presented resolutions asking that the new interchange at U.S. 29 and Harbins Road be named after the late mayor Jimmy Wilbanks.
Dacula leaders plan to keep the same city millage rate that was adopted last year, but property owners in the town will still end up paying more in taxes — about 3.35% more to be exact, according to city officials.
By adopting a millage rate of 4.806, which is the same as last year, Dacula must advertise a tax increase due to increased property values.
"Why are you here today?" Marvin Atherton asked the men, women and children around him, some of whom were seated in fold-up camping chairs, others who lounged on blankets along Dacula Road.
The $9.5 million project is funded by SPLOST 2009, 2014, and the Department of Water Resources with the construction contract awarded to GP’s Enterprises.
